Tradition holds that over five centuries ago Zulu warriors invaded the Songea plains and drove the native tribes into the densely forested Livingstone Mountains overlooking Lake Nyasa . Over time the tribal groups developed their own unique culture and becamse known as the Matengo people, meaning "the forest people". Due to their isolated location, the Matengo have had little outside influence, and to this day many areas remain inaccessible during the annual rains. Despite the fine qualities of their coffee, the remote location makes it difficult for local farmers to capitalize on their special produce. Membership in the Association of Kilimanjaro Specialty Coffee Growers given them access to the financial and marketing expertise required to deliver coffee to cups around the world since 2002.
